Review of Companies Office fees and levies

Progress on the plans to implement a new charging model

The Companies (Levies) Amendment Act 2022 was passed into law in November 2022 and was the first step in a new fees and levies regime for New Zealand Companies Office registers.

In May 2025 the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) sought feedback on proposals for fees and levies (a new consolidated charging model). That consultation closed on 13 June 2025.

The aim of the new charging model is to make the best use of the money we collect from users of our registers. It also seeks to provide more information about what the money is being used for. The new model will reflect the realities of running corporate and business registries in today’s world. It will also help achieve value for money in the Companies Office registry functions.

What happens next

MBIE will analyse the submissions and report to the relevant Ministers on the final proposals.

The final proposals will be presented to Cabinet for approval. If approved they will form the basis of revised regulations under the various pieces of legislation that govern the registers administered by the Companies Office.

Final fees and levies are set to apply from 1 December 2025.
